klunk

////////////:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::

Klunk is Ed First, Michael Clough and Joe Klunkmore.

Eventually, we have to stop talking about "music" - melody, harmony, rhythm, song-structure - and start talking about Klunk - the abstract physical digital synthesis of a sinewave flikker stimulating the earbone. Klunk's sound design is about the abstract nature of sound, sound as object, as pure vibration, as itself. Each sound is presented as a sculptural object and speaks only of itself and the act of listening.

Klunk was conceived as an audio art project to explore dynamics in improvised digital sound in 1999 after Ed, Joe and Cloughy began some experiments exploring the multiple randomisation playback of extremly short sound bytes in MiniDisc recorders.

In January 2000, Klunk gave a lecture at Leeds School of Art on the subject of Contemporary Sound Art. As part of the lecture, a performance was given which consisted of a free imrovisation, a live remix of the current number 1 chart single ['Things Will Never Be The Same Again' by Mel C.] and a randomly generated piece of music [which as luck would have it, sounded awful].

Klunk has also performed live at The Termite Club Festival, the Toot Sound Arts Festival in Hull and various other venues in Leeds [Vector, Statement of Intent], Manchester [Alectro Ecoustic] and Glasgow [13th Note].

Reviews:

Klunk: Infrathin [Fencing Flatworm Recordings] "More evidence that all kinds of weird musical life teem beneath the paving slabs of Leeds, Infrathin is as unpretentiously eccentric as a five-dimensional bowl of Rice Krispies. Literally the sounds of snap, crackle and pop, electronica-style; however, that's 'pop' in the sense of pop music only if you happen to be a giant robotic moth from planet Klunk. For everyone else, Infrathin is a record so bewildering that the first three listens float about a metre above the brain's aesthetic judgement department, as tiny, typewriter-esque beats and fizzling interference outbursts compete in a seemingly random fashion.

Slowly, however, some sense starts to creep in, and, as if in the aural equivalent of a Magic Eye picture, the squeaks and scratches become strangely evocative. 'F.G.K.' for example, with it's muffled, cavernous keyboards and echoing percussion suggests a distorted view of life from underneath the bathplug. Other tracks take on the aspect of nature documentaries, sounding like the carniverous crunchings of amplified insects, or the wibbling of herds of android guinea-pigs, whilst the final track 'Fluxus + [plus]' creates a menacing battleground soundscape, where a vibrating humand machine-gun-like cricket chirps become swamped by a huge, apocalyptic fluttering.

For all it's 'come and have a go if you think you're robotic enough' demeanour, Infrathin is perversely enjoyable, creating a funny feeling in the head as your brain struggles to grow new neurons to cope with it, and if you don't love it, then the toater in your life will." AB
