Packaging

FFR has been praised many times for the high quality of its presentation. The 'house style' was a uniform look made up of three elements: jewel cases, photographs of mad looking sea creatures and the tahoma font. The font remains, the other two elements do not.

Firstly, jewel cases: we hate them. They are an ergonomic disaster, fiddly to assemble, cost a lot to post, prone to damage and, most seriously, a symbol of the glassy homogeneity of the biz. We no longer want to clutter your home with them. FFR is not a 'wannabe' label so we are ditching the packaging you need use if you want to be in their gang.

Secondly, those photographs. The problem is they are all stolen from books and used uncredited and unpaid for. They look smart but we were finally struck by moral qualms about stealing someone else's living. Amazing how paranoia about prosecution can elevate the political spirit! When the small crop of covers that we have already printed are used up that will be it - no more stolen artwork. From now on covers will be designed by Rob and Sean using original or copyright free images, possibly with input from the artists if we can bear to cede that much control.

New stuff will be in plastic wallets with full cover covers. We're using silvertop CDrs because they look cool and we're fed up with CDr labels too. Back catalogue CDrs now come repackaged in wallets and new stylish and beautiful black-and-white inserts. The design will be just as praiseworthy but ditching the jewel case format allows for lower prices and maybe the odd weird limited edition.
